While some handset producers have warned of a slowdown in Smartphone sales, any decline could be down to the fact that everyone is buying iPhones rather than anything else. Respected IT research and advisory firm Gartner has reported this month that Smartphone sales in the last three months of last year reached approaching 150 million units, that’s getting on for 50% more than in the same period in 2010, led by Apple’s iPhone. Analysts have even credited the brand with “saving” the market in the wake of six months of falling sales.
Apple had nearly a quarter of all Smartphone sales in 2011′s final quarter, the equivalent of unit sales of 35.5 million Smartphones. The US giant is also now the world’s third-largest mobile seller. The two vendors who sell more, Nokia and Samsung, market devices which are much cheaper to buy. (And another prediction from Gartner is that less expensive Smartphones are going to become increasingly important in the future.) However, Gartner says this level of interest may not be repeated in future quarters, and puts the corporation’s success down to demand for the iPhone’s latest model, the 4S. LG, Sony Ericsson, RIM and Motorola all saw declines in market share , while Nokia’s share is now at 23.4%, compared to 27.1% a year ago, Samsung crept up a couple of percentage points to have nearly a fifth of all sales.
In the final quarter of 2011, say analysts, one in three of all mobile sales were Smartphones. The prediction is that, this year, the trend will continue, increasing by more than a third as against just 7% for feature phones. Smartphones are also showing strong performance in developing markets. In developed ones, such as in the UK, US and Japan, sales have either been close to or already have outstripped feature phone sales for some time. In terms of platforms, Google Android increased its dominance, accounting for over half of all Smartphone sales, an increase from just under a third a mere 12 months ago.
Apple’s iOS and bada from Samsung were the only two platforms which increased their market share, the others all saw significant declines, including Microsoft’s Windows Phone platform, which garnered less than 1.9% of sales.
